Biosearch Life, in collaboration with two more Spanish companies in the biotechnology sector and Spanish food industry, have launched an R & D project in the development of new food products and nutritional supplements, based on natural ingredients, which help to prevent and treat certain health problems affecting women and children. Both population groups have special features and unique health problems which this initiative intends to respond to.

On the one hand, women throughout their lives experience different hormonal stages: puberty, pregnancy, lactation, and menopause. In each one of these stages, the woman needs basic essential nutrients in accord with the physiological changes of every period, in order to avoid deficiencies that increase vulnerability to developing diseases and organic imbalances. On the other hand, children, where nutrition not only aims to ensure proper growth and development, but also to avoid deficiencies or nutritional imbalances that can lead to diseases both in childhood and in later life.

This binomial woman-child requires, therefore, non generalist innovative products adapting to their special features and needs, and which also takes lifestyle into account and the organoleptic preferences of both populations.

In this context, the CARMENTA project was born, under the title "New strategies of technological innovation directed at children’s and women’s health and welfare" which was recently approved in the announcement of the 2015 Feder Innterconecta program. This financing instrument aims to foster stable cooperation in R & D activities among companies located in the main target regions of the "Smart Growth Operational Program 2014-2020".

This initiative, which will last for a total of two and a half years, is subsidized by the CDTI (Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology) and has the support of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and is co-financed by the Structural Funds of the European Union (FEDER).

The consortium, located in Granada, is coordinated by Biosearch, SA Specializing in the research, development and marketing of new products based on natural ingredients with beneficial effects for health, and formed by another two entities: Innofood, I+D+i,, SL, a technology-based company, which has emerged as a response to the need for research, development and innovation services of products or processes, in a multitude of companies in the Agrifood business sectors and Penalva Food, SA ( Nordwik Ice-creams ), A company with over 40 years experience in the manufacture of ice-cream and chilled and semi-chilled confectionary products, leader in the ice-cream sector in Andalusia.

Also collaborating in the project are major institutions, research and technological development organisms, such as the University of Granada, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, the Center for Research and Development of Functional Food (CIDAF) and the Foundation for Biohealth research in Eastern Andalusia (FIBAO). Furthermore, it is supported by the technology platform, Food for Life Spain.

With this project, Biosearch Life aims to establish itself as a benchmark at global level in the Child Nutrition and Women's Health sectors, two of the segments of greatest importance for the company.
