BIOSEARCH LIFE COMMITS TO HEALTHY GESTATION AND LACTATION THROUGH THE MODULATION OF THE MICROBIOTA IN WOMEN

The research addresses the search for innovative solutions to prevent and/or treat women's health problems during the pre-conceptive stage, pregnancy and lactation through the study of their microbiota and the use of probiotic strategies aimed at avoiding or reducing microbiota imbalances.
 
In recent decades, the important role played by microbiota in human health has been revealed. In this respect, the GESTA HEALTH Research and Development project: "Towards healthier gestation and lactation through modulation of the microbiota in women" deals with the search for innovative solutions to prevent and/or treat women's health problems during the pre-conception stage, pregnancy and lactation, through the study of their microbiota and the use of probiotic strategies aimed at avoiding or reducing microbiota imbalances. These conditions of dysbiosis, which particularly affect women during such important periods as pregnancy and lactation, can have repercussions not only on the mother's health, but on the baby's health as well.
Biosearch Life has been a pioneering company in the study of microbiota in breast milk and with this new initiative it intends to continue advancing in this line, delving even deeper into the knowledge of the different microbiota associated with women.
Within the framework of the GESTA HEALTH project, various clinical studies will be carried out that will help to better understand the interaction between bacterial populations, as well as their interaction with the human organism. It is important to highlight that some of the studies that will be dealt with in the project are aimed at finding natural and effective treatments based on probiotics, which would help reduce the use of antibiotics during such sensitive periods as pregnancy and lactation.
This strategy would be in line with the recommendations of the WHO and other official bodies to reduce the consumption of antibiotics, and to reduce the risk of generating multi-resistance in pathogens. The generation of multi resistant pathogens is considered a major threat to global health as this is causing therapeutic treatments that were initially effective against certain diseases, to become unsuccessful.
On the other hand, antibiotic treatments cause imbalances in the microbiota of the mother and baby, which can negatively affect the colonization process of the child.
The baby's colonization with a balanced microbiota is key to the baby’s development, and will have an impact throughout his or her life. An essential factor in the baby's colonization process is the mother's own microbiota, which acts as an active source of bacteria for the baby. The GESTA HEALTH project will deal with the relationship between the mother's microbiota and the child's colonization process in order to study the factors involved, and to design intervention strategies in the mother to ensure the baby's correct colonization.

The three-year project, with a total investment of € 2.3 million, is supported by the Centre for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) through the granting of partially reimbursable aid, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. (ERDF) through the Multi-regional Operational Programme of Spain 2014-2020 (IDI-20181226).
Also deserving mention is the collaboration of major research groups from different universities in Spain, such as the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Granada and Barcelona, as well as health services and hospitals.

After the completion of the CARMENTA project: "New strategies for technological innovation aimed at the health and well-being of children and women" (approved in the 2015 announcement of the ERDF Interconnect programme), GESTA HEALTH is a new sign of Biosearch Life's commitment to children and women's health, two lines of research in which the company has been working intensively over recent years, in order to consolidate itself as a global benchmark.
