SEACOLORS: Demonstration of new natural dyes from algae as substitution of synthetic dyes actually used by textile industries

ASEBIO is participating in the project called "SEACOLORS" within the LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance of the Seventh Framework Programme (7FP).

SEACOLORS main aim is the demonstration and validation of obtaining natural dyes from a sustainable and renewable source, algae, and their application in textile industry to replace synthetic dyes which are pollutant and harmful for the environment. With this improvement, it will be obtained less contaminated waste water, by the higher biodegradability of natural dyes, reducing the water purification process and contributing to the application of the politics and community legislation regarding waste waters.

The expected results will lead to a substitution in the use of synthetic chemicals by a natural and renewable source, that will turn dyeing into a more ecofriendly and economic procedure.

Our objectives within the project are to disseminate and transfer main project results in order to arrive to the different stakeholders of the project, promoting and raising interest in the project results among the European audience and through European bodies and networks and communicating the opportunities of biotechnology as a promoter for innovation in sectors in which it is less implemented (textile, chemical, waste management, environmental...).

With the contribution of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union (No. LIFE13 ENV/ES/000445).

SUMMA Project: Identification of early and aggregated demand of technologies in the field of personalised medicine (advanced markers) in the National Health System

Many of the companies which make up ASEBIO develop hi-tech products and services in the field of personalised medicine. Particularly in the area of new markers (predisposition, risk, diagnosis, prognosis, choice and response to treatment, etc.) that are being discovered by using high-throughput analysis technologies (genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics ... etc), which will be referred to as advanced markers, a powerful tool for moving towards more efficient and cost-effective medicine.

These technologies are changing the biopharmaceutical business model, towards a more open environment, with greater opportunities for innovative companies. This new scenario is, particularly in the case of the Spanish economy, a clear opportunity for the generation of wealth and employment. We have strengths like our National Health System, scientific and clinical excellence and a very dynamic biotech industry, which will lead to a definitive increase in "local market access" by international customers to validate the available products and services and mobilize investment for future development.

ASEBIO has launched the SUMMA project in collaboration with Avantia XXI, and with the support of Merck, REGIC and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism through the "innovative clusters program", for the purpose of:

  • Gaining a better understanding of  the perceptions of clinicians and health managers on these developments and their implementation in the National Health System
  • Identifying possible areas of development of new product categories that address unmet needs in two areas: oncology and haematology; in which the use of these technologies are initiators are being pioneers
  • Testing the interest for multiple technologies which have already been developed or are under development in Spain

The main focus of this project is aimed at establishing adequate communication channels between public demand and private provision. To this end, a survey will be carried out to determine the perceptions of health policy-makers, hospital managers and opinion leaders in oncology and haematology regarding the maturity and degree of penetration of these technologies, their impact and cost effectiveness.

It will also seek to assess the respondents' knowledge of, and interest in, the possible use of these innovative instruments to promote innovation in public demand (innovative public procurement), which is one of the priorities adopted by the European Union (Horizon 2020), the Government of Spain and regional governments in their R&D policies.

It is all aimed at identifying unmet needs and future development opportunities, in both areas, based on products and services currently available in the market. It is a technology forecasting exercise aimed at identifying early and aggregated demand for technology by the Spanish National Health System to facilitate the alignment of research efforts by companies and institutions with the perceived needs of clinicians.

Thus, by identifying strategies for dialogue and collaboration between the National Health System and the companies that make up the Spanish biotechnology business community, we hope to establish the foundations for recovery, promote development, the generation of new knowledge and encourage companies to maximise their market and their future internationalisation.

For this reason ASEBIO will hold various business meetings to define the needs and interests of our national health system and to establish joint collaborative projects between administrations, so that businesses and government work in the same direction, resolving current problems and helping our health system to reassert itself as a service of excellence in healthcare.
