BIOLATAM, a summit announced this week in Chicago on account of the BIO International Convention, will be held in Bogota on December 9th and 10th of this year
Madrid, Thursday, April 25th, 2013. This year Bogota will host the first edition of BIOLATAM (, on December 9th and 10th. This event will be held bi-annually, on odd years, and seeks to become the leading event in Latin America for the biotechnology sector and the promotion of business opportunities among bio-technology companies, and also between them and the user sectors (pharmaceutical, sanitation products, foodstuffs, veterinarian, energy, among others) from all over the world, whose specific interests are pointed towards Latin America.

BIOLATAM is a partnering forum with global reach and Latin American focus, open to companies, researchers and venture capital companies. The partnering module will be managed using the PartneringOne software by EBD Group -the regular provider at Biospain and other renowned fairs-, and the conference agenda will cover bio-economy and bio-fuels, advanced therapies, food bio-technology, personalized medicine, sanitation products and venture capital, among others.

The Spanish Bioindustry Association (ASEBIO) tasked with the organization of Biospain (5th largest trade show in this sector worldwide in terms of business development meetings in 2012), along with Invest in Bogota, the agency for the promotion of the Colombian capital city, are the companies driving BIOLATAM, which is already supported by several institutions. Both organizations announced this global initiative in the context of the BIO International Convention, the largest trade show in the world for this industry, held in Chicago, Illinois between April 22nd and 25th.

The expectation for this first edition of BIOLATAM is for attendance to exceed 500, with a high percentage of delegates from the US, as well as other Latin American and European countries, and with representatives from relevant bio-technology markets such as Japan, Israel and Canada.

"We believe Colombia is the ideal country to partner with in Latin America, and to become a bio-technology hub in the region for many reasons: the commitment that institutions have towards innovation, the country's political and legal stability and the historic and academic relationship that exists between Colombian and Spain - the Colombian scientific community is the second largest in Spain after the German community- as well as the economic strength of many bio-technology dependent sectors such as foodstuffs, cosmetics and energy, as well as its rich bio-diversity", explained Regina Revilla, president of ASEBIO.

"In the past two years, ASEBIO had been analyzing potential Latin American partners to jointly address business development opportunities in the region. It finally chose Bogota which, also, boasts an unparalleled geo-strategic position that allows for many direct flights to be organized directly to and from the main cities in the Americas", Revilla continues.

Juan Gabriel Perez, Executive Director of Invest in Bogota, comments: "Bogota is very pleased to have been chosen to host the first edition of a globally prestigious event such as Biolatam" A few weeks ago, the most recent ranking published by fDi Markets American Cities of the Future, 2013 listed Bogota as ninth from among 49 cities in the American continent, and as the first city in Colombia, based on its doing business environment. Also, when all the variables assessed are weighed in, the city was ranked fifth as City of the Future, from among 120 cities in Latin America, after Sao Paulo, Santiago, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. The results from this ranking also prove that Latin America will continue to be, in the medium-term, one of the most dynamic and attractive cities globally".

The Spanish Association of Bio-Companies (ASEBIO) is comprised by 235 partners, most of them small companies created from research conducted at universities and national research centers.

Since 1999 ASEBIO has been a meeting and promotion platform for organizations interested in the development of the national bio-technology scenario. To this end, it collaborates closely with the regional, national and European administrations, as well as with all other social organizations interested in using bio-technology to improve people's quality of life, the environment and to promote the generation of skilled labor.
